Discovering Medieval Castles of Romagna

1° DAY
Visit to Rimini, Renaissance capital and home of the Signoria Malatesta. Stroll through the magnificent old town, and the most important monuments of that time: Palazzo dell’ Arengo, Palazzo del Podestà, Castel Sismondo and Tempio Malatestiano. This is a true gem of the Italian Renaissance commissioned by Sigismondo Malatesta and designed by Leon Battista Alberti; inside you have the chance to admire the Crucifix of Giotto, the fresco of Piero della Francesca, the tombs of Sigismondo and his wife Isotta and a great painting of Vasari. After the visit transfer to the chosen food hotel, accommodation in the reserved room. DINNER, free evening and overnight.

2°DAY
Breakfast in the chosen hotel. Departure to SANTARCANGELO DI ROMAGNA, one of the best-preserved and living villages of the area, perched on the Colle di Giove (Hill of Jupiter). Stroll in the nice hold town of the medieval hamlet, where the famous Arco Ganganelli rises up; it was built in honor of Pope Clemente XIV, rich of towers, bastions, gateway and palaces, to the majestic Rocca Malatestiana. Visit to the mysterious tuff stone caves, labyrinth of ancient caverns dug in the clay, which in the past were used for many purposes: religious, strategic and so on. (Caves are not in depth, the path is not hard and no specific apparel is required, comfortable shoes are recommended)… Later on, visit to the farmstead “La collina dei poeti”, in a suggestive frame, surrounded by rolling hills, you will visit the winery, producer of Sangiovese, Albana and extra virgin oil. Tasting of typical products, chance to buy them directly from the producer. LUNCH in a typical trattoria, on the track of “Passator Cortese” with from farm to fork menu.

In the afternoon, the tour moves on to VERUCCHIO, stronghold of the Signoria Malatesta. Visit to the majestic Rocca Malatestiana, also known as Rock Fortress, for its strategic position on a rocky spur overlooking the hamlet. This is one of the biggest and best-preserved Malatesta fortresses, and is an example of many architectural styles, from the XII to XVI century, blended together. The tour ends with a visit to the Civic Archeological Museum, where rare and fine findings of the Villanovian civilization (like grave goods, everyday tools and even a wooden throne) are preserved. This folk was famous for the commercialization of amber. Return to the hotel late in the afternoon. DINNER. Free evening and overnight.

3° DAY
Breakfast in the chosen food hotel. Excursion to the impregnable hamlet of SAN LEO (entrance to the Fortress included). The fortress, situated at an height of 583 meters is perched over a rock, overlooking the entire Marecchia Valley and nowadays can be reached only thanks to one road. Francesco, who was given as present the Monte della Verna by the Earl Orlando di Chiusi del Casentino. In the fortress, converted into a prison under the pope domination, Conte di Cagliostro and Felice Orsini were imprisoned. They died here in 1795 (Cagliostro) and 1844 (Orsini).
