Verucchio

The history of Verucchio dates back to period between the IX and the VII century B.C.. In this period the town hosted the precursory of the Etruscans: the Villanovianis. Their existence is testified by the presence of rare findings like arms shields, helmets and tools of high quality that can be admired in the Archaeological Civic Museum, located in the Convent of Sant’Agostino.

After the Villanovianis, the hamlet of Verucchio was run by Etruschis, by the Romans and, subsequently to the collapse of their empire, the Malatestas who built the Fortress, the sacred buildings and the civil works that have contributed during the centuries to the enrichment and the amplification of the territory conquered it. Thanks to the Malatestas, therefore, there has been a strong development and growth of this place allowing Verucchio to merely live a remarkable season.

For these reasons the Rocca Malatestiana (sec. XI-XVI). Is called the “Fortress of the Stone” Besides thatm the Borgo del Passerello – second Fortress of the Malatestas – and the Convento Francescano (sec. XIII) are not to be missed. Expecially the Rocca Malatestiana, situated on the tallest point of the area, is the place where Mastin Vecchio was born, a powerful commander of numerous villages and defender of the dominion of the Montefeltros, also quoted in the Hell of Dante’s Comedy.

Moreover, the territory offers a range of events as the Fira de Bagòin (Fair of the pig) – usually held January on Saturday evening and on Sunday, it boasts music and gastronomic stand where it is possible to taste ciccioli, salamis, cutlets and fegatelli. –Or the Verucchio Music Festival – in July, a range of events directed by the extraordinary composer and musician Ludovico Einaudi… Or the Feste Malatestiane – in August medieval dinners with typical recipes of the of the Malatestas ages -, the Fiera di Santa Croce – Fira of ‘quatorg’ (fourteen) – in September, a fair of goods and livestock – and many others with the purpose to make your stay in the territory of Verucchio more and more pleasant.
